What a tribute video is

A tribute video is a short film of photographs set to music, made to honour someone. At a funeral or a memorial it is often the moment the room settles: people who did not know each other see the same life pass in front of them, and it does something that speaking cannot.

It goes by several names. Funeral directors tend to say tribute video. Families more often say slideshow or memorial video. They describe the same thing, and if you have been given one of these words by a funeral home, it is what you are looking for.

Tribute videos are not only for funerals. They are made for retirements, for milestone birthdays, and for anniversaries, wherever a life or a chapter is worth marking. The tone changes. The construction does not.

How long it should be, and how many photos

Three to five minutes if the video plays during a service. That is the length of one song, and it is what a room can hold without shifting in its seats.

Each photograph needs three to four seconds on screen. Less and it does not register, more and it drags. Three minutes holds 45 to 60 photographs, four minutes holds 60 to 80, and five minutes holds 75 to 100.

Group photographs and any slide with text need a beat longer, closer to five or six seconds, because people are reading rather than looking.

If the video will loop at a reception rather than play in the service, length stops mattering in the same way. People come and go, and a longer film is fine.

Where in the service it plays

As people arrive, it runs on a loop while the room fills. Nobody watches it end to end, so length matters less and a longer version works. It sets a tone before anything is said.

Inside the service, it is the set piece. Three to five minutes, one song, and the room watches together. This is where a tribute video does the most, and where length discipline matters most.

At the reception afterwards, people come and go and conversations continue over it, so a long loop is right. This is also where an instrumental track works better than one with lyrics, since it sits underneath talking rather than competing with it.

If you are unsure, ask the funeral director which they usually do. They will have an opinion and it is usually the right one for that venue.

What makes a tribute video work

Start earlier than you think. Photographs from before your own memory of the person are the ones the room has never seen. A parent at twenty is someone the mourners never met, and that gap is what gives the film its weight.

Chronological, mostly. The room follows it without being told what it is. Two adjustments are worth making: open on the photograph that looks most like them, even if it sits in the middle, and close on something warm rather than something recent.

Fewer photographs, held longer. A hundred and fifty images squeezed into four minutes gives each one under two seconds, and the room sees a flicker rather than a life.

Their music, not appropriate music. A song they actually listened to does more than one chosen because it suits the occasion.

Not only for funerals

The same construction serves other moments, and the tone is the only thing that changes.

A retirement tribute video runs at the leaving do and works best when colleagues contribute photographs the family never had. A milestone birthday tribute leans on the decades: the same face at twenty, forty and seventy, in order, does more than any single image. An anniversary version is usually two people rather than one, which changes the selection more than the pacing.

What stays constant is the arithmetic. Three to four seconds a photograph, one song, and a length that respects the room.

Why not do it yourself

You can, and if you have an afternoon and some patience with video software, you will get there.

Most families do not have the afternoon. The days before a funeral are taken up with things only they can do, and learning a timeline editor is not one of them. That is the whole reason this exists: not because the editing is hard, but because it is the wrong thing to be doing that week.

You keep the file afterwards. It is yours, not something living inside an account you have to keep paying for.
