The photographs are the hard part
Deciding the length of a funeral slideshow takes a minute. Getting the photographs into a usable state is what actually takes the week.
They are on different phones, in albums nobody has opened since a house move, in a box in a loft, and in three different resolutions. This page is about that problem specifically. If you want the structure, the length and the music, our page on funeral slideshows covers it.
Prints, without a scanner
Most of the best photographs from before about 2005 exist only on paper, and scanning them properly takes equipment and time you do not have.
Photographing them works. Lay the print flat on a table near a window in daylight, away from direct sun. Hold the phone parallel to the print rather than at an angle, step back slightly so your shadow falls outside the frame, and turn the flash off. Flash reflects off the print surface and blows out the middle.
At the size a screen or a projector shows, a phone photograph of a print is indistinguishable from a scan. It is worth saying clearly, because families lose afternoons to scanners they never needed.
Prints behind glass are the exception. Take them out of the frame if you safely can, since glass reflects the room back at you from every angle.
Mixed quality, mixed sizes
A slideshow made from forty years of photographs will mix a grainy square from 1974 with a phone picture from last summer. That is normal and it is not a problem to solve.
What does help is grouping by era rather than alternating. A run of old photographs together reads as a period. The same photographs scattered between recent ones reads as inconsistency.
Very small or very low resolution images are the one genuine limit. An image under about 800 pixels wide will look soft on a large screen. It can still earn its place if it is the only photograph of something, and softness is a fair price for that.
Do not crop everything to the same shape. Portrait photographs shown as portraits, with space either side, look intentional. The same photographs cropped square to match lose heads and feet.
Photographs that arrive from other people
When several relatives send pictures, the same one arrives three times at three different sizes. Keep the largest file each time. It usually came from the original device rather than through a messaging app, and it has not been re-compressed or cropped.
Check orientation before you finish. Images sent through messaging apps sometimes arrive rotated, and a portrait shown sideways is the kind of thing nobody notices until it is on a wall in front of a hundred people.
Screenshots of photographs are worth replacing where you can. A screenshot of a picture in a messaging app carries the app interface and a fraction of the original resolution.
Send them as they are
You do not need to sort, rename, resize or convert anything. Send the photographs in whatever state they reached you, in any order, and there is no limit on how many.
